Description
BlueJ is a free development environment that is available for free and primarily caters for the Java language. It is a great tool for beginners and experts alike.
The University of Kent describe the software as follows:
“BlueJ is an integrated Java development environment developed specifically for introductory programming learning and teaching. It is ideal for small-scale development. BlueJ offers a very easy-to-use and highly interactive interface that allows the interactive creation and invocation of objects.
What’s new in this version: It includes JUnit 4 support (many thanks to Patrick Doran-Wu at the University of Western Australia), and support for the language features introduced with Java 7, as well as a large number of minor bug fixes.
Review
DPS Computing has given this software 4 out of 5. A great tool that spawned from a research project at a couple of Universities. It is used as a teaching tool and an introduction to OO programming at many of the UKs Universities and provides a gentle introduction to OO programming using Java as well as allowing more advanced students to perform fairly advanced tasks with this tool. This tool is mainly beneficial to beginners but can be used to some degree by all. After a developer has comfortably worked in BlueJ for a while they may find it beneficial to upgrade to the Eclipse IDE which will provide them with more possibilities.
