Server Maintenance Today

Hello everybody,

Just to let you know that we are performing some routine server maintenance.  It shouldn’t take more than 30 mins to complete.  During this time there may be one or two side effects with the site but it should stay fully operational for the most part.  The website may go offline for around 5 mins for an important update.

Thank you for your understanding :-) .

Now, our new Hall of Shame seems to have been received quite well and there have been the obvious comparisons to the long running, well respected BBC Crimewatch (obviously though, they deal with much more serious crime than we do!).

So we thought it only fair that seen as though there is a Crimewatch Update, that we have a Hall of Shame update!

Now if you cast your mind back to the grand opening of the Hall of Shame you’ll remember this particular individual.  He was of course ‘areyouakeggar’ and we established that he was a bandwidth thief.

Now, we conducted a little bit of research, to see if we were justified in our actions.  Our very own DPS David, after creating the image and substituting it on the DPS Computing server, had second thoughts and wondered if the action was maybe a little too harsh.  Seeking advice, and maybe reassurance, DPS Computing put it out to the very nice folks of the eUKhost community forums to see what they all thought.

Surprisingly, it was unanimous!  Everyone over at eUK thought the action was completely justified and necessary to deter this type of theft.  Therefore all at DPS Computing now felt confident to carry on with the original plan.

As a quick recap we sought to punish him for this crime and swapped the image that he was stealing our bandwidth by using (costing us £££) with a rather more humorous and truthful image:

Are You A Kegger - Replacement Image

As I’m sure you’ll agree, this image was much more worth of being displayed in the bandwidth thiefs signature!  For months and months it stayed there untouched but DPS Computing has now received information that he has subsequently removed the image.

His signature now simply reads – “I can’t think of anything worth putting as a signature.”.  Well, at DPS Computing, we can think of something that you could put – “I would like to apologise to all at DPS Computing and it’s loyal visitors and members that I stole bandwidth from them therefore disrupting the normal operations and resources that should be available to it’s members”.

If any of you have got any ideas about any other signature suggestions you would like me to forward to him (see, even after what he’s done, we’re still nice people trying to help him out!) then please feel free to leave them in the comments section.

We hope that this has taught areyouakegger a vital lesson that stealing is bad.  At DPS Computing we believe that we can count this as the first victory for the Hall of Shame and it’s unwavering mission to protect the site that we all love.

That’s all for now.  Until next time on ‘Hall of Shame Update’!  Keep safe.  And remember crime of this type is extremely rare (I wish!).  Sleep well and please, don’t have nightmares  ;-) .

DPS Computing is pleased to announce a new reviews category that is due to receive its very first shiny new review in the near future.

Due to the increasing popularity of mobile and tablet technology, DPS Computing thought it only right that to complement the game, software and website reviews currently available on the website, that we should launch a new ‘App Reviews’ section.

If there any any apps on the Android Market or App Store that you would like to see us do a review of, then please leave a comment below.

Apple iPhone 4S

The new iPhone 4s, which launched only a couple of weeks ago has ran into major difficulties with a lot of its users experiencing extremely low battery life.  Results from user testing on iOS 5 have indicated that it might be the location services feature that is the problem.  The current theory is that location data is being pulled far too frequently from mobile phone masts and is therefore draining the phones battery at a much acceleratedspeed.

This flaw will no doubt be slightly embarrassing to Apple but a swift and efficient resolution from them will likely mean that it has done them no harm in the long run.

Location services are provided on most smart phones these days.  Even when these services are running correctly, they are a huge drain on battery as they are simultaneously using information from mobile masts, WiFi and Global Positioning System Satellites.

According to iDownload, turning off the automatic time zone setting will mean that your battery life will last much longer.  The bug means

Applethat when this option is selected your location is calculated over and over again constantly so in case you change timezone the phone can update the correct time.

DPS Computing would advise all iPhone 4S users to currently turn this setting off – unless of course you are somebody that changes time

zone every second  ;-) .

Apple are continuing to investigate and hope to find the problem soon as some tests have been inconclusive with the iDownload results above.

What’s new in this version: This release fixes login issues to Barrons Online and The Wall Street Journal.”

Review

Only a few weeks ago, Google Chrome would have got 4 or 5 out 5 rating from DPS Computing for being such a wonderful new browser and a breath of fresh air in the market.  But unfortunately, we’ve discovered a major flaw with it during testing which means that it’s lucky it’s getting any stars at all.  With Firefox becoming a memory hogging browser and Safari just not quite cutting it, Internet users have now for a while been looking for an alternative.  An alternative came along in Chrome but Google recently ruined it by making it do some of the most annoying things on earth.  Google Chrome evidently doesn’t like Mac OS X (it may even be an issue on Windows as well but we haven’t tested that) as after a varying time of usage the browser will just crash.  At first you will still be able to change tabs but you won’t be able to interact with any of the pages.  Slowly, and no matter what you do, the browser will eventually completely crash and it’ll take OS X down with it.  The reasons for this are unknown.  From our research it appears that there are many many people suffering with this problem and the only replies that DPS Computing have seen from Google are that they are aware of this problem and are working on a fix.  As far as we’re concerned, for an bug which is so major that it crashes the uncrashable, it should have been fixed, like, yesterday!  Until a time that Google has sorted out this issue we’ve had to reduce the rating to 3/5.  And to be honest, it’s lucky that it’s even got that.  Hopefully, for Windows users, this issue isn’t present.  We’ll have a try out in Windows and see what happens.  If the same thing happens as on OS X don’t be surprised when we take the rating down to 0 or 1 out of 5!!

If you’re on Mac OS X and you’re a gluten for punishment, you can always download it from the link below
