Earlier this week, DPS Computing reported how a well known security employee of firm F-Secure was sensationally booted off the website (before being reinstanted) for attempting to warn its users about a phising website.
Now Twitter has once again come under fire as users have found that the seemingly innocent process of changing ones username, e-mail address or password has resulted in them being locked out of their accounts. This has caught out both experienced users and newbies alike.
Does Twitter have a solution? It would appear not as the firms current advice is “Don’t do it” – referring to the process of changing a username, e-mail address or password.
The problem has now persisted for a week according to early reports of the problem acknowledged by the social networking site who at first suggested that users were at fault due to a cacheing issue.

Carphone Warehouse today recieved a huge blow as rival Phones 4 U secured a deal which will see the company stocking Apples popular iPhone before Christmas. Carphone Warehouse, up until now, have enjoyed a two year monopoly on providing the device to customers.
This deal comes a matter of days after Apple also ended their exclusive deal with telecom giant O2, who are now going to allow rivals Vodaphone and Orange sell the popular phone.
These deals will undoubtebly be better for consumers as the rivalry will no doubt involve a pricing competition war right in time for the festive season.
The announcement could be viewed as cynically timed as the iPhone has recently recieved less attention as the release of the Palm Pre device draws closer.
Electronics firm Openmoko has today released a new portable electronic device called WikiReader which aims to take Wikipedia even further as an educational tool.
The offline version of mobile Wikipedia available on the device is hoped to bring Wikipedia into the forefront of encyclopedia based education and it is hoped that it will lead to a bigger uptake in the classroom.
The main fear however appears to be that due to the lack of Internet connectivity of the device, inaccuracies that are normally ironed out by frequent Wikipedia editors may persist for a long time unchecked due to the fact that updates are only due to be released every few months.
Despite this, its creator, Thomas Meyerhoffer – a former designer for technology giant Apple, believes that the device will be a success and that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.
Unlike other mobile devices which appear to consume electricity for fun, the new WikiReader is said to be able to last months on a pair of triple A batteries.
Trouble appears to be on the horizon however as Apple are rumoured to be realeasing a very similar device sometime in 2010 but with added Internet connectivity, which could make that device more desirable. However WikiReader has got a chance at the moment to gain a firm foothold on the market.
Openmoko have lashed out at reports of Apples device by claiming that their device is safer and more child friendly – meaning that constant supervision from parents is not required when using their device.
Martha Lane Fox, founder of lastminute.com and currently the digital inclusion champion for a government task force, has estimated that the British economy would be £22 billion a year better off if all homes were connected to the Internet. The aim of the government task force is to get everyone online by 2012 as there is estimated to be around a substantional 14 million households without Internet access currently.
The exact way in which this will happen is as yet unknown but it has been agreed that success depends on the cooperation of the public and private sectors.
The majority of the extra money estimated to enter the economy due to digital inclusion comes from the expected increase in online sales.
The “Race Online 2012″ report that has made these finding also announces that it expects online individuals to rake in an extra £12,000 over their lifetimes compared to offline individuals.
Sponsers of the government initiative have pooled £12 million together to help get these people online and are being led by communication watchdog Ofcom.
Mikko H. Hyppönen, a researcher for F-secure, an antivirus company, was sensationally booted off Twitter after trying to warn its users about a malware threat.
Twitter, in characteristically slow fashion, only showed the door to Mr Hyppönen 2 months after his alleged violation of the sites terms.
He categorically denied trying to mislead users into visiting the malware site which was one of the many fraudlent websites purporting to be the popular social networking site MySpace. He stated that he even put spaces in the link so that it didn’t auto link to prevent users from even accidently visiting the website.
Twitters private response to the security researcher was brief – “I’ve unsuspended your account. … Be careful!”
The founders of popular social networking site Twitter are said to be looking at different ways to implement video tweets to complement the already present text tweets and bring the site into the 21st century.
Twitter, which as yet has failed to make a profit, has been snubbed recently by many people, including British signer Lily Allen and Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus. The founders hope that this move will improve the popularity of the website and help it become more of a competitor against some of its biggest rivals including Facebook and MySpace.
The new “video tweets” would be able to be uploaded anywhere at anytime, and even on the go, from laptops, mobile phones, digital camcorders and any device capable of recording video.
Twitter is currently valued by the market at £603 million and the founders will be hoping that this new announcement will increase that amount even further.
